Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE): Definition, Eligibility, Benefits, & More

Finding affordable care for the elderly can be a monumental challenge. Thankfully, there are resources available to help you or your loved one get comprehensive care. The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly is one such resource. In this article, we’ll share the program’s specifics, eligibility requirements, included benefits, and more.

What is the PACE Program in Louisiana?

The Louisiana PACE program is an Office of Aging and Adult Services (OAAS) non-profit program that offers health and supportive services to eligible seniors. These services may include adult day health care, spiritual care, rehab services, and more. The overarching goal of this program is to keep elderly people out of nursing homes and in their own community, where they can retain their dignity and have the best possible quality of life.

How Does PACE Work?

With PACE, you’ll receive benefits according to your level of need. But it’s important to be aware of the element of location. PACE isn’t available all over Louisiana. As of the time of this writing, the program is available to those who live in one of four areas:

  • Greater New Orleans (select zip codes)
  • Baton Rouge (East and West Baton Rouge)
  • Lafayette (select zip codes)
  • Alexandria (Rapides and Avoyelles)

If you’re found to be eligible for PACE, you’ll take an assessment to determine which services you may need. Program staff will then set you up with an individualized plan of care. You’ll then receive the services you need so long as PACE provides them.

As for who pays for the care, there are a few potential scenarios:

  • If you have Medicaid ONLY – Your services are free, and Medicaid pays PACE.
  • If you have Medicaid AND Medicare – Your services are free, and Medicare and Medicaid pay PACE.
  • If you have Medicare ONLY – Medicare will pay part of your care, and you’re liable for the rest.
  • If you don’t have insurance, you can pay for your PACE-provided services yourself.

What Services Are Available Through PACE Louisiana?

PACE doesn’t offer every service under the sun. But it does offer a wide range of services that could make a huge difference in your or your loved one’s life. Here are some of the services you may be eligible for through PACE:

  • Primary and specialty care doctor appointments
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Spiritual care
  • Help taking medications
  • Recreational therapy
