March 21st is Down Syndrome day, a time to celebrate the amazing things people with the condition have been able to accomplish. This year, we’re highlighting some of the biggest names in Hollywood who happen to have Down Syndrome. Once we’ve done that, we’ll go over some misleading myths and interesting facts about Down Syndrome.
Madeline Stuart – Model
Madeline Stuart is an extremely successful Australian model who happens to have Down Syndrome. She’s been chasing her modeling dream since she attended a fashion show in 2014 – now she’s known as the 1st professional model with Down Syndrome. Stuart uses her fame to increase awareness around the condition.
Jamie Brewer – Actress
If you’re a fan of American Horror Story (AHS), chances are you loved Jamie Brewer’s portrayal of Adelaide ‘Addie’ Langdon. This was the breakthrough role that thrust Jamie into the spotlight as an actress with Down syndrome. Since her role on AHS, she’s won several awards and acted in over a dozen other productions, achieving her dream of becoming a big-time actor.
Chris Burke – Actor/Advocate
Chris Burke is another renowned actor and advocate with Down Syndrome. From the 80s to the early 2000s, he starred in movies and TV series like Mona Lisa Smile, ER, and Desperate. As of late, Burke has spent a substantial amount of time working as an advocate for Down Syndrome, sharing his story to uplift others with the disability and raise awareness.
Pablo Pineda – Actor/Educator
Many believe that people with Down syndrome are unable to compete academically; Pablo Pineda’s accomplishments paint a different picture. He hasn’t allowed his disability to limit him. He is the first European to earn a University degree with a Down Syndrome diagnosis. He’s gone on to become a teacher as well as an actor, writer, and more. He’s surpassed expectations and continues to do so.

In addition to the above stories, we’d like to challenge some of the most misleading Down syndrome myths and present some interesting facts.
Myth: Those with Down syndrome can’t live alone.
Fact: Though many people with Down syndrome live with others in a group setting, a growing number of them can successfully live alone. It depends on the person’s individual case.
Myth: People with Down syndrome are always happy.
Fact: Those with Down syndrome get angry, sad, annoyed, etc., just like every other human.
Myth: Individuals with Down syndrome are profoundly intellectually impaired.
Fact: Down Syndrome presents differently in each case. Some may be profoundly intellectually impaired, and others won’t be nearly as affected in this way. In fact, many receive high academic honors and earn degrees.
