What is Permanent Supportive Housing in Louisiana?

Permanent Supportive Housing is an LA Road Home Plan program that provides affordable housing and accompanying services to homeless people and people with disabilities. The goal of this program is to help beneficiaries live a successful life in their own community. 

Benefits of the Louisiana Permanent Supportive Housing Program

Permanent Supportive Housing holds a few main benefits for beneficiaries. First, you get an affordable place to stay. Per the Louisiana Department of Health, PSH tenants pay 30% of their income on their rent. In addition to this, you may also receive some or all of the following services at no cost: 

  • Application process/pre-tenancy support. 
  • Intervention in a crisis. 
  • Help communicating with your neighbors and landlords. 
  • Emergency services. 
  • Daily living skills assistance (money management, medication administration, and transportation assistance).  
  • Individual counseling.

Who is Eligible for Permanent Supportive Housing in Louisiana?

Could you qualify for this housing assistance? It depends on a few factors. PSH targets households that meet the following criteria: 

  • Serious mental illnesses
  • Developmental disabilities from before the age of 22Other disabilities that surfaced after the age of 22 (cognitive, sensory, physical, HIV/AIDS-related, chronic illness-related, etc.)
  • The person with the disability must currently be a recipient of Medicaid or Ryan White Services. 
  • The household must be in need of housing services. 
  • The household’s income must be at or below 50% of the median income in their area. 

Note: You must meet all of the above criteria to be eligible for PSH. 

How to Get Permanent Supportive Housing Benefits 

You don’t automatically get Permanent Supportive Housing Benefits. You have to apply for them. Call the Permanent Supportive Housing office at 1-844-698-9075 to start the application process. A representative there will give you more information about how to obtain PSH benefits if you’re eligible.
